3-Day Teacher Training Institutes

Our 3 day Teacher Training Institutes are the best way to prepare to use the Workable Peace curriculum in your classes, while also developing your own conflict management skills. In our Institutes, you will:

• Acquire background information and curriculum materials for teaching in-depth historical case studies.
• Learn to use the Workable Peace Framework to understand and analyze sources of conflict and strategies to deal with conflicts, using activities that can be applied to the study of most historic, literary, and current conflicts.
• Develop and practice conflict resolution skills and learn interactive ways to teach these to students. These skills include perspective-taking, emotion-management, active listening, public speaking, creative and critical thinking, and negotiation.
• Take part in an introductory and a full-length Workable Peace role play, in preparation for using these and other role plays in your classroom.
• Learn strategies and tips for planning, implementing, debriefing, and assessing role plays that ensure student accountability and maximize opportunities for learning.
• Develop lesson plans that integrate the Workable Peace curriculum into your classroom teaching.

The training is hands-on and interactive, balancing the teaching of content, skills, and pedagogy, and generating new ideas and competencies that teachers can apply to all aspects of their work. There is also an explicit focus on implementation, as participants and Workable Peace staff discuss ways to integrate the new concepts and skills into their courses. All Institute attendees become members of the Workable Peace Teacher Network, and receive:

• Copies of curriculum materials, including two full role plays and resources, choosing from Ancient Greece, Rwanda, the Middle East, Northern Ireland, Guatemala, the Pullman Strike, or School Integration in Boston;
• Access to supplemental resources and Workable Peace staff individualized support;
• Invitations to all Workable Peace workshops and activities throughout the year;

We are available to facilitate institutes individually tailored for interested districts and schools, during the summer or school-year.

These 12 hour workshops provide:

• An overview of the Workable Peace framework, and activities for teaching it.
• The opportunity to participate in a short role play about a recent or historical intergroup conflict.
• Ideas for integrating Workable Peace activities and concepts into your curriculum.

Unlike 3-day Institutes, these Introductory Institutes can be scheduled during the academic school year without removing teachers from their classrooms for more than one day. They can even be arranged on a Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.

Workable Peace occasionally offers Introductory Institutes in selected locations in the fall and spring. We are also available to set up individually tailored introductory Institutes for districts and schools.

In-service Workshop Series

Our 5-part in-service workshop series for social studies faculty have three main goals:

1. Introduce content and activities to meet the changing educational needs of social studies teachers post-September 11th, including current events in U.S. Foreign Policy, the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Understanding Islam, Civil Liberties and Racial Profiling, and other related topics.
   
   
2. Introduce the Workable Peace Framework, a tool for analyzing the sources of intergroup conflict, understanding and evaluating strategies to manage conflict, and learning and practicing conflict management skills.
   
   
3. Provide activities and materials that teachers can use in their classrooms.

To accomplish these goals, each 2-hour workshop session includes:

• Content relevant to teachers¹ needs post-September 11th.
• An activity based on concepts and skills from the Workable Peace curriculum.
• Materials from primary and secondary sources that teachers can use to increase their content knowledge and use with their students in the classroom.

In addition to Post-September 11th content, we offer Workshop Series on topics such as Teaching American History or Teaching About Current Global Conflicts. We are also available to develop tailored Workshop Series that meet the specific needs and interests of schools and districts.

Conflict Analysis Workshops

Workable Peace offers 2-3 hour interactive workshops that introduce a set of concepts and skills for understanding the causes of particular conflicts, as preparation for considering strategies to manage conflict. Specifically, a Conflict Analysis Workshop:

• Introduces the Workable Peace Framework as a tool for analyzing the interests, values, emotions and identities of the primary groups involved in a conflict.
• Presents an activity for in-depth analysis of a conflict drawn from history, literature, current events, or the local community.
• Provides extensive teaching materials and resources on the sample conflict topic.
• Facilitates discussion about using the activity with students in the classroom.

Workable Peace is available to present Conflict Analysis Workshops on a wide range on conflicts, from Ancient Greece to school politics and classroom management. These workshops are a good way to begin an exploration of the uses of Workable Peace.

We are also available to teach this workshop to secondary school students, and University pre-service and in-service teacher education programs.

Individualized Classroom Support

If you have attended one of our trainings and would like individualized and direct classroom support as you implement the Workable Peace curriculum, we are available to help.

Classroom Support is also available for educators who are interested in using a Workable Peace Role Play in their classrooms, who are unable to attend a training.

Workable Peace staff can help you:

• Integrate Workable Peace activities and role plays into your curriculum.
• Plan and troubleshoot the implementation of Workable Peace activitie.
• Teach the Framework to students, and assist facilitation of role plays.
• Design assignments, assessments, and rubrics for accountability.
• Pinpoint "teachable moments" in the role plays to guide debriefing and maximize student learning.
• Many other common and unique needs for individual teachers using Workable Peace.
