World History 9 Syllabus: Workable Peace Athens-Melos Role Play
Monday 1/3 Complete Athens/Sparta sources of conflict chart if not finished in class. Read "War Renewed" and "Thucycdides Survives the Plague."
Tuesday 1/4 Write an one-page response examining the strategies used by the Athenians and Spartans to manage their conflict and the outcome of those actions.
Wednesday 1/5 Read the Historical Background and General Instructions of Athens-Melos role play. Write down any questions you have about the history or about the role play.
Thursday 1/6 Read the Confidential Instructions for your role (colored sheets). Complete the sources and strategy worksheets.
Friday 1/7 In your blue journal write an entry evaluating and exploring your experience on the first day of the role play. You are encouraged to be honest. Reflect on the performance of you as an individual, your same-role group as a team, and your class as a negotiation group.
Monday 1/10 Journal entry. Please reflect and make comments on both the process (how you/your group/your class worked, managed tasks and made decisions) and pay attention to content (what you/your group/your class did -- actual decisions/actions made and their consequences).
Tuesday 1/11 Journal entry. Please respond to these focus questions: What difference, if any, is it making that the group has tried to explore needs and concerns before negotiating? How well has each side truly explored the needs and concerns of both their own side and the other?
Wednesday 1/12 Journal entry. Please respond to these focus questions: Now that you can finally negotiate, how are the groups progressing to an agreement? What styles and behaviors of negotiating are being used and how do they affect the escalation and/or de-escalation of the talks?
Thursday 1/13 Final journal entry. Free write. Complete the PEACE Checklist for your same-role group.
Friday 1/14 Read the "Melian Dialogue" by Thucydides and write a response comparing the outcome reached in your role play to the outcome reached in class. What were the similarities and differences in both process and outcome? WHY? Use the Workable Peace Framework in your analysis.
Monday 1/17 Write a formal essay evaluating the Athens-Melos role play experience. Draw on your journal as a resource. Further guidelines TBA.
