Getting Involved: Organizations in the United
States
The Peace Center is located in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. Their web
site offers a plethora of information and resources on peace and conflict
resolution for teachers, students, and members of the community. Working
for community peace and social justice since 1982, their programs are designed
to help reduce violence and conflict in schools, homes and communities
through a multicultural, community-based approach.
COPRED is a community of educators, activists and researchers working on alternatives to violence and war. Founded in 1970 by a small group of teachers and scholars, COPRED has grown to almost 500 institutional and individual members, including K-12 educators, peace activists, conflict resolution practitioners, university professors and clergy. Members of COPRED have access to bibliographies, syllabi collections, curriculum services, a speaker's bureau, an annual conference, a quarterly academic journal Peace & Change, a networking newsletter The Peace Chronicle, and materials for the media.
The Peace Resource Center is part of the University of Minnesota Human Rights Center. The Peace Resource Center hosts documents and links to further the peace movement around the world through action, education, and information. Under the section entitled 'Human Rights Education' there is much helpful information for teachers. The University of Minnesota Human Rights Library, containing a wealth of resources and information, can also be accessed via this site.
Research on Conflict Resolution
The Carnegie Corporation of New York established the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict in May 1994 to address the looming threat to world peace of intergroup violence and to advance new ideas for the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict. Their 'publications' and 'educational resources' sections are useful resources for teachers.
Through their web site, the Oregon Peace Institute seeks to promote
and make available education and resources for peace and nonviolent conflict
resolution in individual community, national, global and environmental
contexts.
This is their main web site which contains information by and about the United States Institute of Peace and a collection of links to Internet resources relating to international conflict resolution, negotiation theory, and peace studies.
