Spring 2000

WP Now highlighted the recent conflict in Kosovo.

We have identified and annotated Recommended On-line Lesson Plans For Kosovo which describes and provides links to ready-to-use on-line lesson plans related to the Kosovo conflict. Many lessons review and examine the sources of the conflict in Kosovo and the various key stakeholders involved.

WP has also identified and annotated Direct Links to Useful Sites on Kosovo. This resource lists and describes a variety of sites which represent the multiple perspectives on the current situation in Kosovo. Educators can use this list as a jumping point for their own research on Kosovo or to organize a computer lab session for their students to explore the needs and concerns of the different stakeholders involved in the conflict.

Using these materials, WP educators and students can discuss ways in which those involved in the conflict have or have not used strategies recommended in the Workable Peace Framework and/or what lessons can be drawn from Kosovo and applied to our own lives and communities.

• Based on a New York Times article that explains how photographs of Albanian refugees have influenced feelings towards NATO’s actions in the Balkans, students choose a Times photograph and write a brief essay explaining what they think is happening in the photograph and how it makes them feel. Students will then select and analyze photographs depicting events in the Balkans and create a news photo exhibit.

• Students will discuss the current crisis in Kosovo, Yugoslavia and express their views on whether the U.S. should get involved in this foreign conflict. Students will write a journal entry about whether governments should risk the lives of their soldiers in foreign conflicts. Students will read the New York Times article, "U.S. Intensifies Threat to Use Force Against Serbs" and then participate a class discussion on the article’s contents and issues.

• Students reflect on the responsibility of newspapers to act as a vehicle for "everyday citizens" to voice their opinions. Then, using an article to gain factual information about government strategies in dealing with the current events in Kosovo, students develop Voices articles modeled after those found in The New York Times.
